Arts Staff to Discuss Public Art Project with Alta Vista Neighborhood Residents

March 5, 2010

Alta Vista Neighborhood residents are invited to preview proposed designs for a public art project at the Deer Valley Water Treatment Plant at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the American Banquet Hall, 2713 W. Northern Ave.  Staff from the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture will discuss the project at the meeting, which is hosted by the Alta Vista Neighborhood Block Watch.

The proposal calls for colorful patterns to a security wall, landscaping and new bus shelters on the Dunlap Avenue side of the treatment plant, between 29th Avenue and Cortez Park. The designs were developed by Houston artist John Runnels, who worked with a local landscape architect to design a unique streetscape for area residents.

During the design phase, Runnels also worked with students at Cortez High School to come up with water-related words that will be incorporated into the design of new bus shelters.

The improvements will be built and installed by local firms, providing jobs through the city of Phoenix Capital Improvement Program.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture was established by the Phoenix City Council in 1985 to advance the growth and development of the city’s arts and cultural community.
